Timex is a powerhouse in the watch industry. They have an enviable lineage and heritage, and, let's be honest, many of us of a particular generation started a lifelong love affair with watches with a Timex.

Collecting a year of birth, Timex is a joy and easy to do. Who wouldn't want a watch that says Shockproof V-Conic Escapement on the case? The model names of the classics define a time in the history of accessible watches: Mercury, Marlin and Sprite.

Turn up to a watch event wearing a Timex, and people will pay attention. Replace the first three letters with an ROL, and you'll find people much less interested.

Timex watches are even more special if you are a British collector. While associated with the USA, British-made Timex watches from Dundee in Scotland represent a fascinating slide of the UK watch industry. Something we are all very focused on just now with the 2024 British Watch and Clock Makers Show.

The 90s and 2000s saw the Expedition range challenge the Tudor Rangers of the world with cost-effective, competent, outdoor specialist watches at low prices. No wonder Timex Expeditions still appear regularly in watch press Top 10 Field Watch features (including ours).

So it's always exciting when Timex comes up with a new watch and complication. Before even seeing the product, you know that the result will be well executed, look good and be well priced.

And that's precisely what the new Marlin Moonphase Multifunction is.

Timex claims: "This piece pays tribute to the great minds that propelled mankind to the moon with a sub-dial that faithfully mirrors the lunar cycle." It might be a stretch to say the new Timex looks like one of the classic Moon Watches, but there's no denying that the dial design, from what we have seen on the initial imagery, is very impressive.

A classic 1960s Marlin inspires the watch and comes in a 40mm stainless steel case with a calendar movement and some dials that indicate the day of the week, the month, and the date. These are positioned with the three and nine indices and the upper half of the dial. The lower half of the dial is given over to the new moon phase feature.

The mono-pusher design adds technical interest and certainly gives the watch a 1960s retro feel.

The dial has been exceptionally well executed, with hand-applied indices appearing in three rich and affluent-looking sun burst colours: Salmon, almost gold, dark green and soft blue. The watches are presented on a stainless steel bracelet or a crocodile-patterned leather strap.

The Marlin Moonphase Multifunction will be available from the 12th of March and will retail a wallet friendly price of £130-£145 depending on specification. WatchGecko Magazine and YouTube Channel hopes to have one in for review before long.

It's wonderful to see this brand still flourishing. The Timex name first appeared in the UK in 1879, but the company did not use it in the US until 1950. It is one of the great brands that just never goes away and is so often overshadowed by the Swiss giants. The new Moonphase Multifunction Marlin deserves to be successful and is another excellent interpretation of the classic Marlin name.
