We journey back to the Seventies for our second collaboration with NTH Watches...
We’re pleased to say that our first collaboration with NTH went so well, that we decided to do it a second time. For this collaboration we tried to imagine what the DevilRay would have looked like back in the 1970s. The end result was a completely new dial design, that's available in four different colours.
Taking A Step Back In Time
The modern DevilRay design takes inspiration from the professional deep sea dive watches of that era, so we looked to those when designing the vintage DevilRays. The first thing we did was flatten the dial, removing the raised rehaut and minute track. This gives the watch a more classic look, whilst opening up the dial and allowing the elements on there some breathing room.
The next step was to give each element on the dial a more retro appearance. We swapped the handset to the sword hands that were used on iconic watches like the Omega Seamaster 300. Naturally we kept the minute hand painted orange to ensure legibility.
When it came to the hour markers, we changed them to be broader, with polished tops and a central channel packed with lume. To add a bit of height back into the dial we opted to keep them as applied markers, rather than ones printed onto the dial.
The dial print is another big departure from the standard DevilRay, with a partial crosshair and offset text designed to evoke the look of classic cushion-cased divers of the era. For the first time, the iconic DevilRay graphic is present on both the dial and case back, and it adds a playful element to an otherwise very practical dive watch dial.A Tool That's Built To Last
Apart from these changes, the new WatchGecko exclusives offer everything that makes the standard DevilRay such a firm favourite amongst NTH fans.
The 43mm stainless steel case features a screw down crown and offers an impressive 500m of water resistance. Meanwhile the dial is protected by a double-domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating in order to provide the highest level of clarity and scratch resistance.
The watches use the reliable Seiko NH35 automatic movement. This calibre has been around for over a decade and has found widespread popularity thanks to its robust construction and solid performance. The movement has 24-jewels and a 41-hour power reserve. When it comes to accuracy NTH has taken the time to regulate the movement, and it will be accurate to -10/+20 seconds a day.
So, make no mistake, just like the standard DevilRays, these exclusive new models are built to be tough bits of kit.
