Following the successful release of the Elka × Ace Jewelers Diversity Series that saw Elka’s signature flowing case and domed dial design decorated with numerals in four different languages, the up-and-coming Swiss maker and long-established Dutch retailer have teamed up once again to offer a pared-back version of the original collaboration.

The Elka × Ace Jewelers D-Series Essence sees all dial markings save for the brand’s wordmark removed. This distillation of design is thus a serene addition to the collection. Utilising a deep, sunburst blue dial, the D-Series Essence leans into the 1960s silhouette of the case and the arresting curvature of the dial to make its statement.

The adage “less is more” could barely apply any better to a modern watch design. Elka knows full well that it has a gem of a format on its hands and has already proven the versatility of the case and dial combination with a slew of releases that, while following the same proportional pattern, are very distinct from one another.

Brands often search long and hard for aesthetic characteristics that instantly mark a watch as one of their own. As time goes by and more and more startup brands are entering the fray with evermore creative designs, establishing one’s own stylistic codes that can be recognised amidst the crowd has never been harder.

Add to that the fact that almost every heritage brand is looking back over their pasts to find forgotten formats that can be effectively adapted to succeed in the modern market, the challenge becomes greater still.

As usual, Ace Jewelers has brought its almost half-century of experience to the table. The Amsterdam-based retailer will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year and has managed to position itself as one of the most astute design partners for brands looking to team up with one of their trusted resellers.

Crucially, Ace knows exactly what consumers want and when. With so many entry-level luxury brand exiting accessible price points as major groups look to chase more affluent consumers, there is a gap in the market for timeless yet characterful designs that don’t break the bank.

This model, limited to 25 pieces and attractively priced at €1,966 including VAT (or €1,625 excluding VAT), will surely gain traction amongst those who are looking for a sophisticated, low-key design from an independent company.

The Ace × Elka Watch Company D-Series Essence (Reference D09-0804), measures 40.8 mm wide and 10.8 mm thick. It is powered by the La Joux Perret G100 but eschews the inbuilt date complication in favour of an uncluttered display. In keeping with the watch’s era of inspiration, the case back is closed and signed with the brand logo.

It will go on sale on February 16th 2024, and, in the true spirit of collaboration, is available both from the Ace Jewelers website and the official Elka site.
