The cushion-cased and military-inspired Panerai Luminor is a watch that’s easily spotted across the room. It’s typically large in size, with a broad, utilitarian-styled cushion case, a prominent crown guard mechanism and a legible dial with plenty of Italian panache. Its execution is simple but instantly recognisable.
Panerai Luminor - Credit Panerai
Alongside its identifiable design, the Panerai Luminor has become well-known for its military roots. In Panerai’s early history, they became the official supplier of precision instruments to the Royal Italian Navy. Their creation of Radiomir, a radium-based luminescent powder, allowed these instruments to glow brightly in the dark and in 1936, the first Panerai Radiomir watch was launched. By 1949, Panerai created another self-luminous material called Luminor which was safer and more luminous. Until 1993, the Panerai Luminor was only available to military forces, but on its public release, it garnered worldwide success.
Although warranted by its build quality, the Panerai Luminor watch isn’t easily accessible to everyone with retail prices hovering around the £7k mark. So, if you’re on the lookout for a similar design with an equally brilliant wearing experience, check out some of our recommended affordable alternatives to the Panerai Luminor below.

Another watch with a distinguishable design and a military history is the Longines Pilot Majetek. This cushion-shaped tool watch was originally launched during the 1930’s and was later relaunched as a modern reissue in 2023. It honours its predecessor with a matte black dial, fluted rotating bezel and two crown guards for protection of the crown at 3 o’clock. The stainless steel case sits at 42mm wide and 13.25mm thick and presents a special plaque on the side engraved with the year 1935 to celebrate the original design’s release date. The watch also has a 100 metre water resistance and a chronometer-certified Swiss made movement. Price: £3,550.
Duckworth Prestex Boulton

The Duckworth Prestex Boulton is a great choice for those wanting the Panerai Luminor’s cushion-shaped case paired with a dressier dial and strap configuration. The 316L stainless steel case is neatly sized for a statement dress watch, measuring to 39mm wide, and presents a crisp porcelain white dial at the centre decorated with traditional black Arabic numerals, a railway track and black cathedral hands. Despite its elegant appearance, it’s still rated 200 metres water resistant and is fuelled by a Miyota 9039 automatic movement. Price: £595.
Farer Lethbridge

Another affordable alternative to the Panerai Luminor comes from British watchmaker Farer. Their Farer Lethbridge model is a 38.5mm wide and 10.5mm tall cushion-shaped steel design with brushed and polished finishing, curved sapphire crystal glass and a 50 metre water resistance. It has a gorgeous sector dial coloured in astro silver and octane blue for an industrial-like finish. Octane blue is used on the dauphine hands and Arabic numerals for easy legibility against the silver brushed dial and matching silver sub seconds. Price: £895
Spinnaker Hull
Spinnaker Hull Riviera - Credit Spinnaker
A whole collection of watches with a look and feel closely resembling the Panerai Luminor is the Spinnaker Hull. This line-up of cushion-cased, stainless steel tool watches have a wonderful militarian vibe. There’s a number of designs worth mentioning including several Spinnaker Hull Chronographs and the Hull Diver Automatic. My personal recommendation would be the Hull California which presents a unique California dial layout that looks a lot like the discontinued and highly coveted Luminor California models. These references have deeply textured dials, 42mm cases and Miyota automatic movements. Price: Starts from £231.
