Described by eccentric British brand Schofield Watch Company as an ‘obscure’ mix of military and alien, the Obscura has been seven years in the making. The watch began its life back in 2017 and has since seen continuous evolution and refinement at the hands of CEO Giles Ellis. Known for charting their own course since 2008, Ellis’ self-confessed enthusiasm for all things ‘extra’ has earnt Schofield plenty of fans, particularly those who favour watches that differ from the industry norms we’ve all become quite used to.

[It’s] something (when housed in its canister), that if discovered in the undergrowth should probably be left alone, or handed in”
Essentially a round watch with central hour and minute hands to tell the time by, the Obscura has been manipulated by the team at Schofield into something far more mysterious. Rather unusually, or perhaps not from Schofield, the Obscura’s Damascus steel case has been crafted using Nazel Hammers to smash different steels together. The material has then been acid etched for texture.

Presented with a dark grey rhodium-plated multi-levelled dial with a fine matte texture, it’s complicated by nature but completely readable at a glance. The hour and minute hands are two different colours, with one skeletonised and the other lumed, and when they cross paths at 12 o’clock they line up perfectly to reveal the hour hand’s lume strip through the window of the minute hand. In a nod to their quintessentially British manufacture, the sub-dial of the Obscura is white with a blue hand and red, white and blue dot.
On the reverse of the case, three smoked sapphire crystals sit in the centre with a grey PVD coating that works to partially obscure the movement that lies beneath. The crystals counteract this, subtly magnifying the movement and drawing the eye to scintillating blue screws amongst other elements.

Finished with a generous helping of Super-LumiNova in different colours and different emissions, which acts as something like a laser show in the night, the Obscura’s otherworldly glow is more eye-catching than anything I’ve seen in a while. Equipped with the Unitas 6498-2 manual wound movement, just 40 pieces of the Schofield Obscura will make their way out to the public at a cost of £9,558.00.
