Two new PVD-coated limited editions have just landed into Maurice Lacroix’s Aikon collection in all-blue or all-black colourways. Both are limited to 888 pieces each and maintain all the familiar attributes of the popular integrated urban watch.

The Maurice Lacroix Aikon is the backbone of this Swiss watchmaker’s collections. Its distinctive style is inspired by a model known as the Calypso, a 1990’s sports quartz watch which was pivotal to the brand’s early success. In 2016, the company decided to take the composition of the Calypso and reposition it for a modern audience. The result was the Aikon, an integrated sports watch with six-claw bezels, integrated bracelets and textured dials.

The Aikon collection has grown to be fairly sizable over the years, offering quartz and automatic variants, chronograph, GMT and skeletonised models and of course, the more recently launched Aikon #tide editions which deliver the sporty architecture in colourful ocean-bound upcycled plastic. The next additions to join the line-up are two Maurice Lacroix Aikon PVD watches in black or blue.

The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Blue PVD watch is the smallest of the two, measuring to 39mm wide and opting for a dark midnight blue PVD coating with a subtle metallic sheen. Meanwhile, the Aikon Black PVD watch is a little larger at 42mm and is executed in gunmetal grey. Both cases preserve the Aikon’s unique six-claw bezel, flat sapphire crystal glass with double antireflective treatment and a 200 metre water resistant rating.

The cases coordinate with fumé dials adorned with a Clous de Paris motif. The 39mm wide blue PVD edition sticks with a deep blue textured dial with lighter hues at the centre and darker shades of blue at the periphery. It also elects rhodium-plated hardware for the baton indexes and straight hands and white Superluminova markers. The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Black PVD watch follows suit but instead opts for matching black hardware for a stealthier finish.

Through the exhibition case back, we are provided a view of the automatic winding ML115 calibre housed within and some of its perlage and colimaçon decoration. The movement boasts classic time-only function and a typical power reserve of 38 hours. Both models are completed by integrated rubber straps equipped the brand’s Easy Strap Exchange system.

The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon PVD watches are limited to 888 pieces each and retail for £2,300.

  • When the reviewer would personally wear it: While I much prefer the non-PVD Aikon models with clean steel cases, the all-black colourway here really suits the model’s sporty aesthetic.
  • A friend we’d recommend it to first: A lover of integrated sports watches.
  • Best characteristics of the watch: I’ve always liked the Aikon’s bezel and that doesn’t change here.
  • The worst characteristics of the watch: There’s nothing to hate, but I definitely prefer the classic steel models.
