Back in 1973 we saw the birth of the first Military Nylon watch straps and recently they have become somewhat of a core trend for watch lovers.
Originally, they were created and issued for the British Armed Forces with extremely specific specifications to live up to. The British Minister of Defence (MOD) needed to provide a strap that was durable above all else and could be relied upon during combat. Leather straps presented humidity issues when worn in warmer climates, steel’s ability to reflect made it a risky mission comrade and rubber straps were prone to wear and breakage. Enter, Military Nylon.

MoD-issued straps were made of tough-wearing Nylon and could only be produced in “Admiralty Grey” at a width of 20mm, with chrome-plated brass buckle and keepers. Military Nylon watch straps have evolved massively since the 1970s though. Today, the straps come in hundreds of colours, patterns and materials. I’d pretty safely say there’s a Military strap out there for everybody now, whether your favourite colour be apricot, violet, or maroon.
The Military Nylon watch strap is an extremely popular choice for watch lovers and there is no sign of them going out of fashion. In fact, why would they? They’re generally inexpensive, functional, and notoriously robust.
Here at WatchGecko, we have something for everyone, with a truly versatile range of Military Nylon on offer. To help you narrow down your next pick, we’ve matched our top five favourite straps with the iconic Seiko Willard. So, whether you prefer bold and lavish, or subtle and timeless, you may just find a new favourite here.

Let’s start with a classic staple. A strap fit to pair with any outfit whilst maintaining a subtle yet stylish look, the ZULUDIVER 1973 in CADET Bond. Available with polished, satin, or Black PVD finishings, personal style can still be honoured with discreet aesthetic differences between each. One of our more traditional offerings, this strap truly captures the essence of the original straps developed by the MoD. In a slight deviation from the authentic 1970s designs, the black and grey stripes on this strap contrast wonderfully and achieve a finished look that is timelessly fashionable.
