In the summer of 2022, BOLDR Supply Company released a new iteration of their popular Venture. Already available in a wide range of configurations, ranging from automatic field watches to chronograph and GMT models, the Venture collection has been a staple for Boldr and is considered to be the brand’s flagship model.

It’s not uncommon for Boldr releases to be thematic and inspired by events both current and past. There was their Field Medic crafted to pay homage to the inspiring Covid-19 frontliners, the special edition titanium Venture Un.dark that sought to highlight the story of the Radium Girls and the Five in a Row x BOLDR Ventures that were released in support of Reverse Rett.

For the Venture Singularity, Boldr’s inspirations were drawn from things far bigger than us and this might require a quick science lesson.

Venture into darkness…

Located at the centre of the Milky Way is a supermassive black hole named Sagittarius A* (pronounced “Sagittarius A Star” and often abbreviated to Sgr A*). It’s mostly dormant and only occasionally absorbs gas and dust but in May 2022 the first images of the accretion disk surrounding Sagittarius A* were released by a team of astronauts and scientists who had been working together in solidarity for several weeks. Although the black hole is not visible due to extreme darkness, scientists were able to infer its presence based on surrounding activity and the images were confirmation of its existence.

The first confirmed image of a black hole came in the form of the Messier 87 in 2019, and excitement was rife in the space and science communities when the Sagittarius A* was confirmed only a few years later. A few months after its sighting, Boldr announced the release of the Venture Singularity, aptly named after the black hole’s event horizon, or the boundary beyond which no light can escape due to gravitational forces.

Mimicking the phenomenon, as well as the visible glowing gases around the black hole, the Boldr team designed the Venture Singularity with ultra-black dial and bright orange lume on the watch hands. Capable of absorbing 99.4% of visible light, the Singularity’s dial is a fitting representation of the extreme darkness of the black hole. Packed with a powerhouse of tough features in a compact Venture-sized wristwatch, the Singularity echoes the massive force that black holes contain in a relatively small area.

The fifth updated version of the Venture Singularity is expected to become available for purchase in May 2024 for approximately £358. This timepiece is a fitting match for space junkies, complete with inspiring custom caseback art that outlines the black hole’s event horizon, but its Venture tried-and-tested features are what make it stand out to the connoisseur. With 4 o’clock screw-down crown, automatic movement, 200m water resistance, durable sapphire crystal, and an integrated titanium bracelet the Venture Singularity is a worthy tribute, crafted with the utmost finesse and wonder.
