There was a brief period where I told myself I didn’t need a MoonSwatch. I could admire from a distance, appreciate the hype, and move on. But let’s be honest—that resolve didn’t last long (I won’t specify just how long). Before I knew it, I was standing in line like everyone else, hoping to get my hands on one. If you can’t beat them, join them. Right?

I can’t deny it—there was inescapably something surreal about the trip to Battersea Power Station that saw me finally cave and take home a MoonSwatch of my own (keep reading to find out which). As I strolled past the boutiques of Tudor, IWC, TAG Heuer, and even Omega itself, I couldn’t help but smile, proudly clutching my Swatch bag. It felt almost rebellious—walking past luxury watchmakers with a watch that had sparked just as much conversation, all for a fraction of the price.

Don’t get me wrong, my argument isn’t that the MoonSwatch is the superior choice. It’s simply a fun (and crucially more affordable) entry point to one of the most significant watches in the history of space travel. Leading with tonnes of personality and customisable charm, the MoonSwatch may be the more casual little sister of the Speedy but since its release in 2022, it has also been one of the most talked-about collaborations in the watch world.

Inspired by Omega's legendary Speedmaster Moonwatch but made from Swatch’s BIOCERAMIC material, these playful, affordable takes on an icon sent collectors into a frenzy. Long queues, resale markups, and heated debates about their legitimacy in the watch world only added to the spectacle. Almost three years on, the MoonSwatch is still a conversation starter—loved by some, dismissed by others, but undeniably influential.

So, with all that in mind, which ones stand out as the best of the bunch? With 11 original models and a growing lineup of special editions, there’s no shortage of contenders—but some just have that extra something special. In no particular order, here are my top five best picks for the coolest MoonSwatch models.

MISSION TO SATURN

Okay, let’s kill the suspense—the Mission To Saturn is my personal pick of the bunch. In fact, it’s on my wrist right now as I type this. It might not be the flashiest MoonSwatch, but it perfectly embodies everything that makes this collection what it is: fun, affordable, and unmistakably Speedmaster-inspired.

At 42mm x 47.2mm x 13.2mm (including the box crystal), the MoonSwatch wears almost identically to the 42mm Speedmaster. Inside, you’ll find a Swiss ETA quartz movement with a chronograph function, plus central hours, minutes, and chronograph seconds. The dial layout sticks to tradition with three subdials: a 60-minute counter, a 1/10th second counter, and an active running seconds display.

With so many choices available, why did I go for Saturn over the others? Simply put, its neutral, timeless colour palette suits my style, while the Saturn subdial detail gives it just enough of a creative edge. And let’s be honest—if Robert Smith himself owns one, I’d say I’m in pretty good company.

MISSION TO THE MOONPHASE – NEW MOON (a.k.a The Black Snoopy)

A hit among Snoopy fans and space enthusiasts alike, the Snoopy Moonphase MoonSwatch duo was an easy pick for this list. While the Full Moon (White Snoopy) teeters on the edge of feeling a little too plasticky, the New Moon (Black Snoopy) is a far more refined and mature take on the beloved Peanuts pup.

Snoopy’s presence on a Speedmaster is nothing new—Omega has featured him on several highly sought-after models, some of which now fetch close to £25,000 on the secondary market. But with the Mission to Moonphase – New Moon coming in at under £300, Swatch has once again made an iconic, playful design more accessible than ever.

MISSION ON EARTH – POLAR LIGHTS

In summer 2024, Omega x Swatch introduced a trio of ‘Mission on Earth’ MoonSwatches, each inspired by a natural element of our planet: Lava, Desert, and Polar Lights. As you might have guessed, this particular model takes inspiration from the breathtaking Aurora Borealis—fondly known as the Northern Lights.

While the trio was met with a somewhat lukewarm reception, the Polar Lights earns its spot on this list thanks to one standout feature: its aventurine-glass inspired dial. Speckled with tiny silver-coloured sparkles to mimic a starry night sky, each Polar Lights MoonSwatch is entirely unique—a rare touch in a collection known for its uniformity.

MISSION TO MARS

At first glance, the Mission To Mars might seem like just another bold MoonSwatch, its striking red and white colourway and spacecraft-inspired chronograph subdial hands giving it an eye-catching presence. But dig a little deeper, and there’s a real story here—one that traces back to the 1960s.

While Omega’s claim to spacefaring fame is most commonly credited to the Speedmaster, the brand’s involvement in the space race goes beyond just the Moonwatch. Enter the Alaska Project—a series of heavy-duty prototypes designed to withstand the extreme temperatures of space. One such prototype, the Speedmaster Alaska II, went on to inspire the 2008 limited-edition Speedmaster Alaska Project and, ultimately, the Mission to Mars we see today.

With its bold, high-contrast aesthetic and those unmistakable rocket subdial hands, the Mission to Mars isn’t just one of the most visually daring MoonSwatches—it’s also a fitting tribute to one of Omega’s most fascinating space-age experiments.

MISSION TO EARTHPHASE

Last but by no means least, the Mission To Earthphase delivers the kind of "cool" I was looking for when putting this list together. Released just last year, this MoonSwatch took things to the next level with a patented Earthphase function—a groundbreaking complication that offers a view of Earth as seen from the Moon.

This innovative feature works alongside the traditional moonphase indicator, giving the wearer a dual celestial perspective. The Earthphase subdial at 10 o’clock displays a vibrant Earth, complete with oceans coated in UV-reactive ink that glows blue under UV light, adding an extra layer of otherworldly charm. This poetic blend of lunar and terrestrial phases makes the Mission to Earthphase one of the most visually captivating MoonSwatches to date—standing out not just in the collection, but in the watch world as a whole.

So, there you have it, my Top 5 MoonSwatch Models. Love them or loathe them, there’s no denying the impact of the MoonSwatch. What started as a playful, affordable spin on the Speedmaster has evolved into a phenomenon of its own, with Swatch continuing to keep collectors on their toes with new releases. Whether you’re drawn to the history, the bold designs, or just the sheer fun of it all, the MoonSwatch proves that sometimes, watches don’t have to be serious to be seriously cool.
