Best Watches Released in October
Timex Waterbury 170th Anniversary
At a time where we can expect price hikes at pretty much every turn, I often find myself standing aghast in supermarket aisles wondering when everything got so expensive. The sentence “you can’t get anything with £1 anymore” has left my lips on numerous occasions as I try to make sense of the soaring prices displayed on the shelves in front of me. The Cadbury Freddo is smaller, and pricier than ever before, brightly coloured plastic tubs of Christmas chocolate seem to shrink year on year and don’t even get me started on petrol. Long story short, things just aren’t as affordable as they once were.
That’s where Timex comes in. Taking us back to the “good old days” a mere 170 years ago when good quality products could genuinely be had for as little as a pound, or a dollar in this case, the Timex Waterbury 170th Anniversary Limited Edition makes its way back into the world in 2024. Costing just as little as it did upon its initial release in 1854, the Timex Waterbury revives a legacy of accessible timekeeping with a modern revival of the $1 Yankee Pocket Watch, Timex’s (or as they were known then, the Waterbury Clock Company) first release.
Limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide (available online or at Frasers in Meadowhall), the Timex Waterbury once again makes watch collecting accessible to all and features a sleek ice-white dial, 170th Anniversary logo, 19mm Roman numeral markers and a commemorative engraved caseback.
Patek Philippe Cubitus Collection
Keeping the theme of historically significant watch brands, our next release comes by way of Patek Philippe. Realising a career-long dream of Thierry Stern, President of Patek Philippe, the Cubitus Collection, as the name might suggest, consists of three square models: two with time/date and one with an intricate new big date movement.
The madness has well and truly begun with watches finding their way onto the second-hand online market at an eye watering £177k+, but what is it about the Cubitus Collection that has gotten people so excited?
The first, and likely most desirable, (ref. 5821A) features an olive green dial which is horizontally ribbed with a sunburst finish, date window surrounded by white gold at 3’clock as well as a Nautilus-esque bracelet and finishing. Reference 5821/AR on the other hand showcases a deep blue dial but is technically identical, this time appearing with a two-tone steel and rose-gold case and bracelet with solid gold bezel, crown and central bracelet links.
The star of the show is undoubtedly Ref. 5822P, featuring a brand-new complication (240 PS CI J LU) complete with grand date at 12 o’clock as well as day and moonphase. The case dimensions remain the same, albeit marginally thicker with extra room needed for the instantaneous jumping grand date mechanism. Sealing the dial is a baguette cut diamond on the bezel.
Grand Seiko SBGY040 “Chisen Teien” and SBGW321 “Nishikigoi”
On paper, the two Grand Seiko European Exclusive limited editions are both inspired by Japanese pond gardens. The SBGY040 “Chisen Teien is a rose gold Spring Drive model limited to just 20 pieces whilst the SBGW321 “Nishikigoi” is a 300-piece mechanical. It’s the dials that really do the talking though…
The SBGY040 features a dark blue dial with a guilloché style engraving of immaculate waves that seem to be in motion depending how the natural light interacts with their unique texture. The SBGW321 on the other hand is presented with a striking red dial and a noticeably smaller case diameter. Based on a Grand Seiko classic, the 44GS, the SBGW321 offers a more accessible mid-size version that shares specs with other popular options like the Green SBGW03, which is also an EU Exclusive.
MoMA x UNIMATIC Modello Cinque
It’s always fun to marvel at the intersect between art and horology. We often see this in the form of high art, tourbillons and skeleton models but sometimes art can be a little more playful and on the nose. UNIMATIC’s latest collaboration with MoMA (Museum of Moder Art, New York City) does just that. Known typically for their black-on-black, rugged, tool watch offerings, it isn’t the first time that the Italian brand have branched out with a more colourful collaboration. Having partnered up with Disney and Highsnobsociety in the past on a grown-up version of the Mickey Mouse watch we all had (or desperately wanted) as children, this time around the MoMA x UNIMATIC collab pays tribute to the iconic De Stijl art movement.
Celebrated in bold primary colours, the new collection features three models in blue, red or yellow. Presented with handy quick-release straps in the three primary colours, matching coloured accents on the seconds hand and thre MoMA logo on the dial and engraved caseback, the limited-edition trio are individually numbered and are
Czapek Faubourg de Cracovie 'Crossroads'
Originally launched back in 2018, the Fauborg de Cracovie was Czapek’s first chronograph model. Revived in 2024 the collection now expand to include two new iterations complete with a racing-style tachymeter scale on the flange and a sporty chic Crossroads guilloché pattern on the dial. The new renditions maintain the classic 41.5mm case diameter but this time around the Arabic 12 has been replaced in favour of double indices. Equipped with the automatic calibre SHX3, the COSC-certified movement offers a power reserve of 65-hours when fully wound.
H. Moser & Cie x Massena LAB Endeavour Chronograph Compax
It feels like we’ve been spoilt with a new H. Moser & Cie. Collab pretty consistently across the past couple of months and October is certainly no exception. Riding on the back of the waves caused by their unexpected partnership with Studio Underd0g as well as a new Bucherer collection, the latest brand to rub shoulders with the Swiss giant are Massena LAB. The Endeavour Chronograph Compax makes its way into the modern Moser lineup, meaning the Streamliner is no longer flying solo in the Chrono category. Taking inspiration from vintage 1940’s Moser chronographs and wielding the authentic Moser logo from the same period, the Endeavour features a modern sunburst dial, 41mm case and is equipped with the HMC220 in-house calibre.
Sinn 6099 Anniversary, 6000 Jubiläum III, 6033B and 1800 TITANDAMASZENER
Embodying timeless elegance, technical sophistication and a special connection to the city of Frankfurt, where the company has its headquarters, the three Anniversary watches (6099, 6000 Jubiläum III and 6033B) are each limited to just 250-pieces and feature a commemorative engraved rotor as well as electroplated dials with sunburst decoration. The fourth addition to the Autumn Novelties line-up is the 1800 TITANDAMASZENER, a unique and limited watch featuring a Titanium Damascus dial, Tegiment technology case and gloss blue hands.
ZENITH X PORTER PILOT Khaki Ceramic
ZENITH has partnered with the renowned Japanese bag brand PORTER for an unexpected, yet harmonious travel themed collaboration. Together, they've reimagined two ZENITH PILOT models in sleek khaki ceramic, accompanied by an exclusive PORTER-designed bag tailored specifically for ZENITH. This limited-edition series introduces the PILOT Automatic and PILOT Big Date Flyback Chronograph, with each model limited to just 500 pieces.
The first release is the PILOT Automatic PORTER Edition. This 40mm timepiece features a khaki ceramic case in an olive tone, echoing one of PORTER’s signature bag colours. Its matte finish lends a rugged, adventure-ready appearance to the collection. The iconic oversized crown, a hallmark of ZENITH’s PILOT watches, is crafted from black PVD steel and given a sharp angular design for an edgier look while still maintaining ease of use, even with gloves.
The second part of this collaboration is the PILOT Big Date Flyback PORTER Edition. Like the three-hand version, this model sports a 42.5mm matte khaki ceramic case with black PVD pushers and crown. It’s powered by the latest generation of ZENITH's legendary El Primero automatic high-frequency chronograph calibre, offering two functions favoured by aviators: the big date and the flyback feature.
Mr. Jones Watches Night Howl
Turning to a British Microbrand now with something a little spookier in honour of the festive period. Mr. Jones Watches have unveiled the Night Howl and the ghostly new creation will creep into the brands permanent collection just in time for Halloween. Designed by French author and illustrator, Xavier Broche, the Night Howl’s dial reveals an eerie forest scene featuring a lonesome woodland cottage and someone trying to uncover the mysteries of the night. As ever with Mr Jones, there’s no such thing as plain and simple hands to tell the time, instead, the wearer should check the torch beam, which represents the minutes, and the ghost, which points to the hours. Naturally! The Night Howl retails for £225 and is powered by a Swiss made single jewel quartz mechanism.
AVI-8 Bell X-1 Machbuster Automatic
Paying homage to one of the most groundbreaking achievements in aviation, the Bell X-1 Machbuster Automatic is inspired by the legendary Bell X-1 aircraft—the first human-piloted supersonic flight in 1947. This historic moment over California’s Mojave Desert not only shattered the sound barrier but also paved the way for future supersonic exploration.
The Bell X-1 Machbuster Automatic captures the spirit of speed, innovation, and exploration with its robust design. Swiss luminous hands and indexes ensure optimal visibility, while the see-through exhibition caseback reveals a custom rotor modelled after the Bell X-1's iconic exhaust system. A hybrid leather and rubber strap provides long-lasting comfort and durability, paired with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a reliable Japanese automatic movement for exceptional performance and clarity.
Beaucroft Element 39.5mm
Embodying the sacred elements of a ‘Go Anywhere Do Anything’ watch, the Beaucroft Element feels at home on the wrist in the office, by the pool or out in the depths. Equipped with 200m water-resistance and a scratch-resistant coating, the Element is elegantly refined by six vibrant dials, comprised of 3 layers built up from the base. Finished with a generous infusion of BGW9 Super-LumiNova on the hour markers and a chamfered edge sunray chapter ring, each Element watch is inspected by Horologium with the Miyota 9039 movement regulated to a tolerance of +/- 10 seconds per day.
